Bolton preview
Roy Evans is expected to add Jason McAteer, Patrick Berger, and Karl Heinz Riedle to the squad which beat Derby last week for the trip to Bolton.Of the three Riedle is the most likely to return to the side at the expense of Michael Owen.McAteer looks to have lost his place to Rob Jones, while Berger and Riedle have recovered from achilles and groin injuries respectively.
Bolton have only won the one game at home, last week against Chelsea, and Liverpool will be looking to add to their one win away from home this season (at Leeds). With both Chelsea and Leicester facing difficult games a win for Liverpool could put them into the top four.

Transfer Speculation
Neil Ruddock could be set for a move to Celtic after loosing his place to Dominic Matteo.Roy Evans is said to be looking at Japp Stan of PSV and Rosenberg's Erik Hoftun and the possibility of Ruddock leaving seems to be increasing.Celtic have funds available and Wim Jansen is apparently prepared to pay £3 million for his services.
Liverpool remain the favorites to land the £1 million rated Brad Friedel and are said to have reached some sort of agreement with his club Columbus Crew.
Peter Robinson is trying to push through a work permit but could yet hit problems with red tape.Glasgow Rangers are also linked and would have an easier task as the Scottish League is allocated a set number of work permits which are rarely taken up.Friedel himself is thought to want a move to Anfield. If and when he does arrive it could lead to David James asking for a move.
Mark Kennedy is still being linked with a move to Leeds United despite the fact that they have said they don't want him.Jason McAteer has angrily rejected allegations that he is desperate to leave the club, although the final decision could well be taken out of his hands, he said: "The time has come to put all the transfer talk at the back of my mind."I've let myself down and other people down."I just want to concentrate on my football. The situation is quite simple, I've got to get back into the Liverpool team."

Evans looks for 'new Ruddock'
Liverpool manager Roy Evans was on his travels again last night taking in an international game. As Evans has been linked with a number of central defenders, we can only presume that was the area that he was making checks on last night.Although we cannot confirm where Evans actually was, he wasn't in Dublin or Moscow. That leaves the games between Croatia and Ukraine, or Hungary v Yugoslavia.
It remains to be seen, after being linked to the likes of Paganin, Lemsalu, Tchedadze, Stam and Hoftun, who Roy Evans actually brings in.For our money, Rosenborg's Erik Hoftun will be a Liverpool player, albeit in the New Year. Hoftun looks as though he'll make a clean sweep of all the Player of the Year awards in Norway.
A signing of a new central defender will spell the end of Mark Wright's career at Anfield, he's been linked with Fulham. Neil Ruddock could well be the subject of a £3m bid from Celtic who are preparing to sell Alan Stubbs to Sheffield Wednesday.Ruddock suffered a knee injury in the first game of the season at Wimbledon and had a torrid time on his return to European action in Strasbourg. The 29 year old would probably welcome the chance of first team fooball in Scotland.

Babb signs new deal
Liverpool central defender Phil Babb has, finally, put pen to paper on a contract at Anfield that will see him stay at the club until after his 30th birthday.
Babb's form has been nothing short of a revelation so far this season, he is finally silencing the doubters who questioned the size of the £3.6m fee that Liverpool paid to Coventry City three years ago.The new deal puts The Republic of Ireland defender into an exclusive category of top earners in British football, the two and a half year deal worth some £20,000 a week to the 26 year old.
Babb, who is currently out of the side nursing cracked ribs, would have been out of contract at the end of the season and, therefore, eligible for a free transfer under the Bosman Ruling. His decision to commit his long term future to Anfield is a clear signal that manager Roy Evans rates Babb very highly indeed. Once fit, in a couple of weeks time, Babb will again be pressing Dominic Matteo for his first team place back.Despite Babb pledging his future to the club, Roy Evans is still after a new centre-back ......

Friedel for Rangers !
Straight from the horses mouth comes the news that Liverpool target Brad Friedel could well be on his way to Glasgow Rangers. The 26 year old US National keeper has forged links with Richard Gough during his year with Columbus Crew and it is Gough who would be instrumental in the move.

Venables link rubbished
Former England boss Terry Venables is set to see out the remainder of his contract as coach of Australia despite being linked to a number if top managerial jobs recently, including Liverpool. Some press reports have been suggesting that the former England coach was to take over the hot seat at Anfield, but these suggestions seem to be off the mark.
Soccer Australia chief David Hill said: "Terry is not free to leave if we don't qualify."He is totally focused on getting us to the World Cup. Even if he didn't have a contract he wouldn't leave. He won't be going anywhere."

Dalglish on the score sheet
A young reserve side held a more experienced Manchester United side to a 2-2 draw last night in the Pontins League. Paul Dalglish and David Thompson got the Reds' goals against a United side boasting the likes of Brian McClair, Karel Poborsky, Edwin van der Gouw and Ben Thornley.
Liverpool had the better of the contest overall but could not convert any of their numerous other chances.

Kennedy's transfer request accepted
One month after putting in a transfer request, Republic of Ireland international Mark Kennedy has finally been granted his wish. The 21 year old is now free to leave Anfield as soon as the right offer comes along.
It is thought that Leeds United will be leading the chase for Kennedy, but would play him as a left wing-back in place of out of form David Robertson.
Nottingham Forest, Bolton, Wimbledon and Middlesbrough are also known to be monitoring the sitaution.

Scouts from Everton and Liverpool were at the Ipswich Town v Bury clash on Saturday. They were watching the England Under 21 international Kieron Dyer.
The young left-sided defender cum midfielder is a class act and helped steer Ipswich to a 2-0 win.
Dyer scored the only goal of the recent England v Italy Under 21 clash and is rated very highly indeed. He's not a well-built player but his pace and agility have earned him rave reviews.

Mark Wright injury blow
Mark Wright is expected to be out of action for at least three weeks as a result of him aggravating an old back injury while playing for the reserves against Everton on Thursday night.
We understand that he will have the injury checked by a specialist this week to see if there is any ongoing problem that could require him to take a longer spell out of the game.
News Headlines
McAteer Interest
Liverpool's Republic of Ireland international, Jason McAteer, looks to have run out of options at Anfield. Now that Roy Evans is playing the more 'traditional' 4-4-2, McAteer has been ousted from the right back slot by a fit again Rob Jones and has no chance of finding a slot in the Liverpool midfield after the purchases of Oyvind Leonhardsen, Paul Ince and Danny Murphy.
AC Milan have registered an interest, but the latest English team to be linked with the 26 year old are Aston Villa who, after missing out on Paul Gascoigne, are set to step up their search for a battling midfielder.
Spurs, Arsenal, Wimbledon and Middlesbrough are all said to be interested.
News Headlines
Babb future doubt
Liverpool manager Roy Evans is homing in on PSV Eindhoven defender Jaap Stam, the potential acquisition of the 26 year old may well mean that there may be a few departures out of Anfield.
Mark Wright, once over his back injury, may well go to Fulham. Neil Ruddock, after a woeful game against Strasbourg, could find that his future lies elsewhere. Phil Babb has yet to sign an extension to his contract that expires at the end of this season and, with the new found form of Dominic Matteo, Roy Evans could cash in on Babb now rather than lose him on a free transfer.
According to reports, Aston Villa are said to be interested, as are Sheffield Wednesday.
